The project was established to strengthen the capacity, resources and influence of civil society organisations, community based organisations and grassroots movements in Kenya, enabling them to participate meaningfully in civic life, defend human rights and contribute to more inclusive, equitable and accountable governance. The project is grounded in a simple principle: communities and grassroots organisations are not only beneficiaries of development and human rights work; they are important agents of change and sources of knowledge about the issues affecting their communities. Haki Ni Yetu therefore brings resources, knowledge, networks and opportunities closer to the communities and organisations working at the frontline of human rights and social justice. Through a combination of grant funding, capacity strengthening, mentorship, organisational development, community mobilisation, advocacy, networking and strategic communication, the project has supported civil society actors to transform local concerns into collective action and policy engagement. The project addresses three broad areas: democracy and the rule of law; gender equality and non discrimination; and business and human rights, including environmental and climate justice.

Investing in Grassroots Organisations

At the heart of Haki Ni Yetu is an understanding that many of the organisations closest to communities face significant barriers in accessing financial resources, technical support, networks and opportunities to influence decision making. The project has therefore invested directly in strengthening these organisations while creating opportunities for them to lead solutions within their communities. Through five grant calls, comprising two Rights, Governance and Accountability grant calls and three Civic Action and Community Empowerment Grant calls, Haki Ni Yetu received more than 1,200 applications and awarded 66 grants to organisations working on human rights across Kenya. More than 90% of the financial support went to women and youth led organisations and organisations led by marginalised groups. The larger Rights, Governance and Accountability Grants supported more established civil society actors, with 22 grants awarded across 21 counties. As of January 2026, these grantees had organised more than 190 human rights trainings, trained 158 civil society organisations, reached more than 5,100 rights holders and engaged 660 duty bearers. The Civic Action and Community Empowerment Grants, meanwhile, were designed to reach smaller community based and grassroots organisations that are often the hardest to reach and least likely to access conventional funding. Through this mechanism, 44 grassroots projects received support across 15 counties, with initiatives covering social accountability, prevention of gender based violence, women’s rights, youth engagement, land rights, environmental justice and business and human rights.

Bringing Change Closer to Communities

For CSO Network, Haki Ni Yetu has provided an important platform for working alongside grassroots organisations and communities across Western and Nyanza Kenya, particularly in counties including Bungoma, Kakamega, Vihiga, Busia, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori and Siaya. Our work has focused on strengthening the ability of local organisations to understand their operating environment, develop effective programmes, engage duty bearers, mobilise communities, document evidence and advocate for change. Beyond financial support, organisations have received mentoring, coaching and capacity strengthening in areas including organisational governance, project management, financial management, advocacy, monitoring and documentation, communication, public participation and social accountability. This approach recognises that sustainable change requires more than funding a single activity. It requires organisations that are able to manage resources responsibly, develop credible evidence, build partnerships, communicate their work and continue engaging communities and institutions long after an individual intervention has ended.

Explore Haki Ni Yetu

Campaigns &
