BACKGROUND OF THE PROJECT:
Kisumu County has faced rapid political and social changes and transformations, creating barriers for achieving lasting peace and social cohesion. Due to historical injustices, political tensions and economic disparities, mistrust between communities and the government has increased, impeding efforts towards reconciliation and social cohesion. The county’s youth, who form a significant segment of Kisumu’s population, face unique challenges that impact social cohesion. High unemployment rates among the youth, limited economic opportunities and a perceived lack of voice in decision-making processes leave many young people disillusioned and marginalized. This frustration among youth can contribute to heightened tensions which usually emerge during election when youth vulnerabilities are taken advantage of leading to violence and conflicts.
The project recognizes that communities are the first line of defence and therefore will apply a community-led interventions by promoting dialogue, building trust and promoting collaborative action, in decision making and appreciating the role of existing traditional mediations structures in building community resilience
